Alternatives to Frontier: Which is better?

Frontier shares a footprint with a variety of companies. Its toughest competition in urban areas is likely to be cable and fiber providers, while its rural competitors will be other DSL companies and fixed wireless providers.

Frontier vs. Spectrum: Spectrum and Frontier share a footprint in many areas in the eastern half of the country and some parts of California. If you can get Frontier Fiber, it’s probably a better deal than Spectrum. But Frontier’s DSL service is definitely worse. More generally, Spectrum has worse equipment and installation, value, and performance—but about the same level of customer service.

Frontier vs. Xfinity: Xfinity shares a footprint with Frontier mostly in New England the Great Lakes area. While Frontier fiber internet is almost always better than cable internet of any kind, Xfinity is the best cable internet provider. So if any cable provider can give Frontier a run for its money, it’s Xfinity. These companies tie when it comes to value and performance. Frontier has a better equipment and installation rating, but Xfinity has better customer service.

Frontier vs. Optimum: Optimum and Frontier overlap in the areas surrounding New York City, the Dallas area, West Virginia, and several other locations scattered around the US. In most of these places, you’ll see only Optimum cable internet. However, if you can get its fiber service, it’s better than Frontier fiber. Optimum also has cheaper cable plans than Frontier’s fiber internet, but they’ll have much slower download speeds. Finally, if all you can get is Frontier DSL, both Optimum fiber and cable plans are a better deal.

Where is Frontier available?

Frontier’s DSL service is widely available—it’s in 25 states around the country, with a relatively even spread on both coasts. The largest gaps are in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. However, the fiber service is available in only four states: California, Florida, Indiana, and Texas. Bummer.
