In the US, many people living in remote areas don’t have access to fast, reliable internet service. If you’re choosing between a satellite provider like Viasat and other types of internet, we recommend getting a wired internet connection like cable or fiber, or even a 4G LTE fixed wireless connection if it’s available to you.
But if you don’t have those options, satellite internet is available almost anywhere, as long as you can get a clear view of the sky. Satellite internet can be costly, and it isn’t particularly fast or reliable.
The two main satellite internet providers in the US are HughesNet and Viasat. A third satellite internet provider, Starlink, has popped up in the last few years and is a promising addition to the mix.
Viasat vs. HughesNet: Viasat offers faster speeds than HughesNet, up to 50 Mbps, as well as cheaper plans for those who don’t mind slower speeds. HughesNet offers only one modest speed, 25 Mbps, and some affordable plan options for those who don’t use a lot of data.
Viasat vs. Starlink: Starlink’s satellites are closer than its competitors’, so it is able to offer much lower latency, though service isn’t available in as many places yet. That means many people will have to choose between Viasat and HughesNet for now.
Viasat satellite internet service is available nationwide. Coverage includes all 50 states and reaches households in rural areas where traditional internet providers often don’t offer sufficient internet service, if any.
If you cancel your Viasat service before the end of the 24-month service term, you’ll be responsible for paying a termination fee that amounts to $15 for each remaining month of the term. When you cancel, you must call Viasat within seven days to coordinate the return of your leased equipment. You are also responsible for removing the equipment yourself and sending it back to Viasat. If you don’t return the modem and transceiver within 30 days, or they’re damaged beyond normal wear and tear, you have to pay fees of $50 for the modem and $250 for the transceiver.
The HughesNet Gen5 service plans are designed to deliver download speeds of 25 Mbps and upload speeds of 3 Mbps, but individual customers may experience different speeds at different times of the day. Speeds and uninterrupted use are not guaranteed and may vary based on a variety of factors including: the configuration of your computer, the number of concurrent users, network or Internet congestion, the capabilities and content of the websites you are accessing, network management practices as deemed necessary, and other factors. When you connect to the HughesNet service using Wi-Fi, your experience will vary based on your proximity to the Wi-Fi source and the strength of the signal.
